The Zoological Society of London’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. As well as ZSL conservation programmes which take place in over 50 countries around the world, ZSL runs two UK zoos and the Institute of Zoology (IoZ), its scientific research division.

ZSL was founded in 1826 by Sir Stamford Raffles with ZSL London Zoo, the world’s first scientific zoo opening just two years later. In 1928 ZSL opened a second zoo, ZSL Whipsnade Zoo which was the world’s first open zoological park. 1960 saw the establishment of the Institute of Zoology (IoZ), ZSL’s research institute specialising in scientific issues relevant to the conservation of animal species and their habitats.
